Spiritual practice: some thoughts about (ick!) love

This week I was blessed with the time to take TWO yoga classes, and both teachers talked about love. I appreciated their courage, because there’s an ick factor there for me, you know? What is that? Anyway, I decided to try and share my thoughts about love.

I’ve been doing my chakra cleansing practice for 2 weeks now. I am happy to report that it is helping me do more effectively what my Ayurveda Lifestyle teacher Dr. Claudia Welsh advised us to do: “fall in love with your practice.”

Why? Because, she explained, the hormone we get when we feel love, or even just a meaningful connection, is Oxytocin.

Oxytocin opens up our ability so socialize, empathize and allow for possibilities – some doctors are even considering prescribing it for Autism, because of its ability to help reduce repetitive behaviors.

So when love is part of our spiritual practice it helps us let go of old patterns, and limiting ideas of who we are and what we can and can’t do. It helps us reach out to others and connect, which is where most of our meaning comes from. It helps us evolve.

And we don’t have to be breastfeeding or having a romantic dinner to release Oxytocin. We don’t even have to have a good conversation with a friend. I have found that love is a practice you can do, just like handstands. It is the experience at our center that we find when we remove our blocks to it.

As Rumi said, “Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.”

So what blocks us from feeling love throughout our day?

1.) Too many things on our to do list

2.) Too much pressure to do them in a certain way or reach a certain goal

3.) Pent up, unexpressed emotions

4.) Physical discomfort

5.) Not choosing to remove the above obstacles to love

Having a morning practice helps me get clear on the rhythm of my day, releases physical discomfort and it gives me time to see the why of it all. If I get to feel love during my practice, it’s just way more effective.

So what’s your morning practice like? I love working with the chakras, but maybe that’s not your thing.

So if love feels kind of far from where you are today, I recommend doing the Ho’Oponopono practice for at least week.

Repeat this as many times as you need to to start feeling the love, and then keep going for a few more minutes:

I love you

I’m sorry

Please forgive me

Thank you

You can direct it at any person or situation that feels like it’s blocking you from your natural loving essence. The person or situation whose ENTIRE fault it is that you’re feeling this way. Ultimately, of course, it will do its work on you, and how you feel will shift, and the whole situation will shift. Dramatically. It’s amazing how powerful we are when we are not blocking our essence.

I hope you do try it and it helps you feel the love Mama – not just for your little ones and your family; for nothing except the delicious experience of being who you are on this earth: a loving spirit in a body.

Thank you for spreading the Ma love!
